Free Geeks at CSCC is a charity organization who accepts donations of both hardware and cash by individuals and companies. We take in and refurbish donated hardware to assemble well-working computers which then get donated to people in need in the Columbus area. Unfortunately, many PC's that are donated do not have the necessary working parts to assemble highly functional PC's, so we do accept cash donations to pay for the cost of replacing those parts.
At Free Geeks at CSCC, we understand the importance of protecting your data. Before any PC is refurbished and granted out, we run DBAN (a program that completely and permanently deletes the data on the hard disk).
Demonstrating our commitment to the development of affordable software and our support of the Open Source community, each granted PC will be loaded with Open Source applications and the Ubuntu [Linux] operating system. You can load this operating system onto your PC for free by going to Ubuntu.org.
Our team has also developed an easy to follow guide to using a system with the Ubuntu operating system. You can download this guide by clicking here.
Reusing computers eliminates their ending up in land fills. Computers contain many toxic chemicals and these dangerous chemicals become a source of pollution of our land and water, if not properly disposed of. Fortunately, almost everything in a computer can be recycled or reused! For more information on the toxic chemicals that reside in computers, click here.
